Biggest News Of Digital Marketing - CASL

CASL - Canadian Anti-Spam Legislation

I came to know about CASL about two weeks ago but never thought of posting on ADWG. Reason, I did not go through it much except that:

  1. It is going to take effect from July 1, 2014 on.
  2. It is applicable to "Commercial Electronic Messages".
  3. You should take it seriously to make your list CASL compliance, ask away Canadian subscribers to ensure that they really want to receive your emails.
  4. If not CASL compliant, risk millions of dollars in fine for the senders. (I just wish I was born in Canada or I was living in Canada, or I could own a Canadian email address,  really!!)
  5. Did you miss what I just said within the parentheses? Let me repeat, if somebody who is not living in Canada but is Canadian and owns a Canadian email address can also sue those who dare sending email without them subscribing to their emails.
I simplified it for you, so, you know what CASL is at least! Still not clear? Google, buddy! or read this article - CASL Compliant, are you?

Until next time...

Thanks,
J.

Emails That Land My Spam #1 World Vision Messages

Email Marketing Rules Broken

1. I am not subscribed to their mailing list.
2. I marked all messages from site2sms spam. So World Vision India should do some investigation before using a third party medium to send messages.

Update: I received their mail again and this time it landed in my "Updates" tab and it had unsubscribe link too. I unsubscribed.

Thanks,
J.

How I Feel When I Receive Personalized Welcome Emails?

Now a days, everybody is talking about personalized newsletters and how they can help you get high open rates. Though i agree that these newsletters make me open their emails but they also force me to close it as soon as I open. Why?

because..

1. although they personalize the email with my name, content is definitely not me.
2. Content is too lengthy and I don't have time to go through it.
3. Too many fonts, CTAs and scattered content.
4. Single font type but font choice is terrible. Looks totally spam!!
5. Blue hyperlinks in bold and underlined. Looks spammy!

And there are more! Will keep adding.

Thanks,
J.

What Are The Cases When An Email Can Be Marked As Open?

How do you determine that the mails were actually opened?

1. When a recipient actually opens an email in inbox. (HTML Mail)

In this scenario, the javascript pixel should load, only then an email will be marked as open considering that you have tracking pixels within the email.

2.  If a recipient clicks on an a link in an email. (TEXT Email)

Next question: Is the open rate we get in reporting tool correct?

Thanks.

A general question and a very common, expected and true answer -

Poor rendering of emails and newsletter strongly negatively effects the customer experience and increases complaints.  Depending how sloppy the code is (many missing closing tags, common, uncommon html errors etc) it can cause severe delivery issues and reputation damage.  Since most companies put significant time into making sure that their templates and content are properly formatted and most spammers send out emails put together quickly which are poorly formatted, it causes significant content-based hits to the reputation at nearly every ISP.

From now on, if you tend to ignore those thin white lines appearing in the email, or some junk characters appearing in the subject line of your newsletter, you should not overlook it. It's for you and all-

Virus and Trojans in Emails or The Daily Newsletters, WHY?

Trojan Horse in Emails
Trojan Horse in Emails

I never thought of Trojan Horses until today when I came to know that some recipients of a top 10 bulk email senders started complaining about Torjan Horse attack when they click on a link of the daily newsltter they received. My first step was to start googling if I could read anything related. But all I found was "What Trojan Horses are?", "How trojan horses infect?", "How can we repair the loss" etc. Nothing about them hitting our emails.

One new thing that I learned was that Trojan Horses can attack your computer not only in form of executable files but in other formats like MP3 files, image files and video files[See Sources: 1]

Ultimately,
the issue was found with Ad vendor that was the culprit of the issue. The script was removed from the website and it resolved the issue.

Email Delivery Errors | Relay Access Denied

Error Sample : 554 5.7.1 <emailaddress@aol.org>: Relay access denied

Reason : This error indicates that, somehow, a message intended for a Yahoo.com address found its way to our penpublishing.com mail server, and since our server doesn't accept mail for yahoo.com, the message was rejected. It is quite rare, actually, to reach a completely incorrect mail server when sending email to a domain, so if you receive this message, the problem is usually a misconfiguration error with the receiving domain (for example, if you receive notice that mail sent to a Pen Publishing user was rejected by a Pen Publishing mail server with this "Recipient Address rejected," error, this could indicate a problem with our mail servers, since Pen Publishing's mail servers obviously should accept email for Pen Publishing users. Or, it could indicate a problem where the sender's system isn't looking the mail server up correctly). [Read more @PenPublishing]
